Education Abroad Programs (EAP)

If you can afford to go to UCI, you can afford to study abroad!

Don't let financial concerns prevent you from pursuing your dream to study abroad. Because the EAP program is closely integrated into the academic structure of the University of California, you are allowed to apply most funds received through Financial Aid to your time abroad.

  • Aid Available
  • All UCI financial aid (such as grants, scholarships and loans, with the exception of work-study) is available to qualified EAP students who participate in programs taking place during the academic year.

Limited aid is available to qualified EAP students who participate in programs taking place in the summer.

Financial Aid eligibility criteria are the same when studying abroad or studying at UCI.

If you are not awarded financial aid up to your full-cost, you can apply for a private loan to fill the gap.

  • How to Apply for Aid / Financial Aid Deadlines
  • It is recommended that all study abroad participants complete a FAFSA or a California Dream Application by the priority deadline to ensure that you are considered for all types of financial aid for which you might be eligible. You do not need to indicate that you are participating in EAP on your FAFSA/DREAM application. For more details about applying for aid, visit this page.

The Study Abroad Center on campus will provide a list of EAP participants to the Financial Aid Office after the deadline to drop with a refund; you may inquire of dates with the Study Abroad Center on campus.

Your financial aid award will be adjusted based on the total cost of participation in the study abroad program you choose. There are differences in the way grants, scholarships, and loans are adjusted. The Financial Aid Office will notify you via email after your aid is revised.

If you have questions, you can email us at (note: please include in your subject line the name of the country in which you plan to study), or visit our office to talk to an EAP Financial Aid Counselor.

It is not necessary to make an appointment to speak with an EAP counselor. However, it is recommended that you email them at to schedule an appointment; we are open Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm.

All study abroad participants are also strongly encouraged to investigate UCI scholarship opportunities, non-UCI scholarship opportunities, and scholarship opportunities available only to EAP students.

  • Attending an EAP Orientation Session
  • All EAP Participants on financial aid are strongly recommended to attend an EAP Orientation Session once the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships has reviewed their financial aid applications. You will be notified by email when the orientation is scheduled and ready for you to attend.

Financial Aid Counselors will be explaining the Financial Aid process for EAP Participants, and will be available to answer questions about your financial aid awards, financial aid disbursements, payment of fees and late charges, etc.

    2. Your parent must complete the online Parent PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN) by logging into the Department of Education website at
    3. Our office will mail out two (2) copies of the PLUS Confirmation Sheet to you. If you are a first time PLUS borrower, our office will send the Confirmation Sheet to you the student. If you are NOT a first time PLUS borrower, our office will send the Confirmation Sheet to your parent. Our office generally begins mailing PLUS Confirmation Sheets in mid-June.
    4. The confirmation sheet needs to be returned to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
    5. Please note that your parent must pass a credit check to be eligible for the PLUS loan.
    6. If the loan is approved, there are two options for loan disbursement:
      1. Send loan disbursement to UCEAP: Your parent can provide authorization to our office to send their PLUS loan proceeds directly to UCEAP to pay the cost of your EAP participation by completing, signing and returning the Disbursement Authorization for Parents of EAP students form [pdf]. Please be sure you read the form before signing.
      2. Send loan disbursement to parents: Our office will send the PLUS loan funds directly to your parent when the quarter begins at UCI via a paper check. Once your parent receives the check, it will be your parent's responsibility to pay any outstanding debt directly to UCEAP. PLUS loan disbursements cannot be disbursed sooner than the beginning of the quarter.
    7. If the loan is denied, your parent will receive a letter from the Department of Education explaining the process of obtaining an endorser (co-signer) or provide you with information on how to clear your credit status. If the loan is later approved, your parent will be required to complete PLUS counseling before the loan can be disbursed by logging into the Department of Education website at
    8. For general information regarding PLUS loans, please visit our Direct Loan information page.

NOTE: If you didn't accept a loan prior to your program departure date and wish to borrow it during your program, please email to notify our office.

  • Paying your fees
  • Once you have accepted your award on-line and have completed all necessary loan forms, we will forward all "accepted" funds to the UCEAP office.

UCEAP will apply these funds to your EAP Program Fees.

If financial aid funds are not enough to cover your fees, UCEAP will send you an invoice for the balance which you will have to pay by the posted due date on the invoice. Financial aid students are deferred from the first payment. You are required to pay the second payment which is due on the first day of the month in which your program starts. A late fee of $50 will be charged for payments not received by the second payment due date. If financial aid comes in after this date, the late fee will be reversed at the discretion of the UCEAP Office.

Generally, if you accept your funds early and there is a remaining credit after fees are paid, UCEAP will make the disbursement based upon your program. Refer to the following schedule:
