Summer Session 2009

Funding Available

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships has limited funding available for UCI students attending Summer Session and Summer Travel Study Programs.

For undergraduates, funding is limited to:

  • William D. Ford Direct Loans (requires enrollment and completion of at least six units)
  • Federal Direct PLUS Loan (requires enrollment and completion of at least six units)
  • Federal Pell Grant (requires enrollment and completion of at least six units)
  • Academic Competitive Grant (1st and 2nd year - requires enrollment and completion of at least twelve units)
  • SMART Grant (3rd and 4th year - requires enrollment and completion of at least twelve units)
  • UCI Grant (requires enrollment and completion of at least eight units)

If you had eligibility for loans during the academic year, we encourage you to utilize those funds to assist with your summer costs.

Eligibility

We encourage all students to estimate their financial aid eligibility for Summer Session online. You can do so by selecting "Log on to My Aid" and select "Summer Session Financial Aid" under the "2008-09" options.

To receive financial aid during Summer Session you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a continuing UCI student.
  • Must have a 2008-09 FAFSA on file with UCI. If you have not completed a FAFSA, we recommend you complete it at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You must complete your FAFSA by June 30, 2009.
  • Complete a Summer Session Financial Aid Application online
  • Enroll in a minimum of six (6) units during one session or a combination of Summer I, II or 10 week session.

How to Apply:

In order to complete your Summer Financial Aid application, you must complete three steps.

  1. Complete a Summer Session Financial Aid Application on-line.
  2. Enroll in classes at Summer Session after one (1) business day.
  3. Return to My Summer Aid to finalize and accept your financial aid award after another one (1) business day.

It is important that you finalize and accept your Summer Aid within five business days of enrolling in Summer Session or your classes will be dropped and/or you will be billed.

Available Funding

UCI Summer Grant

UCI Grant funds are available to those students who had UCI Grant eligibility during the 2008-09 academic year and maintained their financial aid eligibility throughout the academic year.

Important Notice: At this time, summer grant awards are tentative based on budgetary constraints. We will review our available funds and confirm grant awards during the first week of May.

William D. Ford Direct Loan Program

Students are eligible to borrow any remaining funds which they may have available. To determine if you have any loan eligibility remaining for Summer Session subtract the amount of your 2008-09 academic year loans (both subsidized and unsubsidized) from the grade level indicated below.

Dependent Students
 SubsidizedUnsubsidized
Freshman    $3,500$2,000
Sophomore    $4,500$2,000
Junior/Senior    $5,500$2,000

For dependent students who have borrowed their full FDSL eligibility during the academic year the only form of funding for Summer Session(s) is a parent PLUS loan.

Independent Students
 Subsidized        Unsubsidized
Freshman    $3,500$6,000
Sophomore    $4,500$6,000
Junior/Senior    $5,500$7,000

For independent students who have borrowed their full FDSL eligibility during the academic year the only form of funding for Summer Session(s) is an alternative loan.

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan

The parent PLUS loan is available to parents of dependent students. Loans can be certified up to the cost of Summer Session, minus any other financial aid a student may be receiving for summer. PLUS loans are based on credit approval.

Pell/ACG/SMART Grant

Pell, ACG and SMART Grant funds are available for Summer Session for those students who have remaining eligibility from their 2008-09 academic year award.

Cal Grant

If you will be graduating in Summer or Fall 2009, you may be eligible for Cal Grant.

Payment of Fees

In order to have Summer Session fees paid students must

  • Submit the Application for Summer Session Financial Aid.
  • Accept your financial aid funds.
  • Enroll in Summer Session classes.
  • Be enrolled in at least six (6) units.
  • Our office will begin paying fees for eligible students on June 12, 2009.

Disbursements

Financial aid funds for summer will be disbursed in the same method as the academic year; either mail or direct deposit. Disbursement information can be changed at sbs.adcom.uci.edu. The following are the dates financial aid will be disbursed for on-time applicants:

Session I    6/22/09 *
10-week Session    6/22/09
Session II only    8/3/09 *

* If you are enrolling in both Summer Session I and II you may receive two disbursements, one at the beginning of each session.
