Federal PLUS (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students)

  • The Federal Direct PLUS loan program is designed to assist parents of dependent undergraduate students who are unable to meet their expected parental contribution or have additional financial need that is not met with other financial aid resources.
  • Loans that are identified as "replacing Expected Family Share" are offered to you as an option to replace the contribution expected from you or your family.
  • Loans that are identified as "replacing need" are offered to you to help meet your financial need.
  • Your parents may borrow up to the cost of your education for the academic year less any estimated financial aid you receive each academic year.
  • The application for a Direct Loan will not be processed through a bank, but rather through UCI and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • A credit check will be performed during the application process. If your parents have an adverse credit history, they may still receive a loan by obtaining an endorser who does not have an adverse credit history or documenting to the U.S. Department of Education's satisfaction extenuating circumstances relating to their adverse credit history. Parents who are approved despite an adverse credit history are required to complete PLUS Credit Counseling.
  • Information regarding interest rates is available at:
  • The U.S. Department of Education Student Loan Support Center will send correspondence for all activity on your loan. If you have additional questions you may contact them at 1-800-557-7394 or visit the Direct Loan Servicers web page.
  • PLUS loan repayment begins 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed for an academic year. Upon request, the parent can defer the repayment to begin six months after you leave school or drop below half-time; however interest will accrue during this time. There is no grace period for this loan. Parent borrowers must call the Direct Loan Servicing Center (DLSC) at 800-557-7394 to request a deferment based on the dependent student?s enrollment status.

A loan fee will be deducted proportionally from the loan amount prior to each disbursement. Loan fees are available at

Your loan proceeds will be divided by the number of terms you attend and will be credited to your ZotAccount. Once your fees have been paid any remaining funds will be sent to your parent.
