University of California Loan Practices

Loans are money that must be repaid over a period of time, usually after a student leaves school.

The federal government offers both subsidized and unsubsidized Direct Loans as well as Graduate PLUS loans. The federal government pays the interest on subsidized loans while a student is enrolled at least half time. For unsubsidized loans and Graduate PLUS, students are responsible for paying the interest while enrolled.

The university also provides loans to School of Medicine students who meet certain criteria. If you are eligible for these loans information regarding the loan, interest and repayment will be provided to you as part of your award letter.

School of Medicine students may also apply for private or alternative loans.
