Animal Lovers Scholarship

Application Deadline: Wednesday, May 31, 2017

Award Amount: $1,000

Application Submission Process: Students must submit an Animal Lovers Scholarship application to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at 102 Aldrich Hall.

All applicants are required to submit a personal essay (500-2,000 words) describing your efforts to help animals and how these efforts have changed your life and/or shaped your perceptions about the importance of animal health (preference shall be given to those with a special interest in cats). Your essay should be accompanied by two (2) or more photographs related to the subject matter of the essay and a statement of your career goals. Applicants will also need to submit two (2) Letters of Recommendation.

The Animal Lovers Scholarship is open to all majors at UC Irvine. Although applicants for this award will appreciate and value all animals, special consideration will be given to:

  • Applicants who show a history of kindness and appreciation for "companion pet animals" (e.g., cats and dogs)
  • Applicants who show a history of kindness and appreciation for all animals (domestic and wild animals)
  • Applicants who show a history of personal pet ownership, volunteering with animal organizations, animal rescue groups, animal shelters, animal foster services, animal sanctuaries, veterinary clinics, wildlife refuges, zoos, etc.
  • Applicants who intend to pursue careers related to "companion pet animals" (e.g., pet wellness, pet health care, humane pet treatment, pet advocacy and any other activity promoting care and kindness to companion pet animals)
  • Applicants who eventually plan to earn graduate degrees (e.g., DVM, MD, DO, PhD, JD, MS, MA, etc.) in Veterinary Medicine, Human Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacology, Psychology, Life Sciences, Liberal Arts, Technology, Teaching, Business, Nursing or Law are encouraged to apply for this scholarship

Additional Information:

  • Applicants should demonstrate a meaningful interest in the compassionate and kind treatment of animals (e.g., applicants should promote responsible pet ownership and maintain a positive attitude about protecting the health, comfort, care and safety of animals). Special preference will be given to applicants who have personal experience in owning, fostering, volunteering, or caring for companion cats, rescue cats, domestic cats or exotic cats

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Minimum 3.45 GPA
  • Open to all majors at UC Irvine
  • U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • In good standing at UC Irvine
  • Demonstrate sufficient academic ability for completing a graduate education
  • Exhibit a strong personal desire and commitment to make life better for pets and animals
