In April 2004, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, a world-renowned spiritual leader and recipient of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, visited UC Irvine to discuss ethical leadership and personal responsibility in the new millennium. In 2005, the UC Irvine XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of His Holiness' visit through donations from local individuals and foundations committed to advancing peace, ethics and compassion. His Holiness returned to the UCI campus for a visit in 2011 and then for a Global Compassion Summit honoring his 80th birthday from July 5-7, 2015. During each visit, he has met with the UCI Dalai Lama Scholars.

This unique scholarship served as the model and catalyst for the international Dalai Lama Fellows program. UCI is now partnering with Dalai Lama Fellows to support exceptional students committed to advancing the values of compassion, contemplation, courage, interconnectedness, collaboration, humility and service. The recipient of the UCI Dalai Lama Scholarship becomes part of the Dalai Lama Fellows global community and benefits from a generous grant for project costs and guidance for project implementation.

Through this partnership, UCI and the Dalai Lama Fellows support exceptional UCI undergraduate students who want to design and launch ambitious "compassion-in-action" projects aimed at engaging campus and/or community members in order to increase their awareness in one or more of the following areas: ethics, compassionate leadership, local and global responsibility, and/or peace. Preference will be given to projects that specifically target one or more of the following areas: (a) promoting cooperation across religions and cultures; (b) diminishing violence; (c) alleviating poverty; and (d) protecting the environment.
