Thomas and Lillian Ma immigrated to America in 1960's. They toiled as a grocer and seamstress to support their family. Like most immigrants, Thomas and Lillian knew the importance of good education as a path to success. UC Irvine provided that opportunity for 3 of their 4 children: Ernest (PhD '70), Sam (PhD '82), and Diana (BS '79). All the Ma children became successful professionals and leaders. They pass on their parent's belief in the importance of a quality education to their children. It is no wonder that many of the Ma grandchildren also chose UC Irvine for their higher education: Steven Ma (BS/BA '07), Phillip Chau (BA '07), Melody Ma (BA '14), and Darren Lieu (BS/BA '16). Since the campus' infancy, Thomas and Lillian Ma have supported UC Irvine as proud Anteater parents and then grandparents. Zot! Zot!

The UC Irvine Thomas and Lillian Ma Endowed Scholarship will assist students who demonstrate financial or personal hardship and meet the additional requirements of the scholarship.
