Applying for financial aid often requires you to enter sensitive personal information. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) is a safe and easy way to automatically transfer your information directly into the FAFSA form. It’s the fastest, most accurate way to enter your tax return information. With the IRS DRT, you don’t have to hunt for your tax records or worry about making costly mistakes.

NOTE: The 2024-25 FAFSA will not have the IRS DRT.

First, you need to determine if you are eligible to use the IRS DRT tool. If you or your family have already filed a U.S. tax return with the IRS, you will most likely be able to use the tool. If you are ineligible, you will just need to enter your tax return information the old fashioned way.
